Guédelon and Bourges

Friday morning we hopped on the bus to start our journey south of Paris.

At Guédelon, a group of people has been working for 20 years to build a new castle using medieval techniques.  Among other things, the workers showed us how they used templates to carve matching stair steps.  I found the whole process fascinating and was only disappointed that we didn't get a chance to see them operate the hamster-wheel crane for raising stones.

The town of Bourges has retained many of its medieval buildings.  Our local guide led us through the rain to the cathedral and explained some of the stories in the stained glass.  She also pointed out parts of the Roman wall and how to identify the tell-tale brickwork.

The next morning we were free to visit the Saturday food market.  I also took the opportunity to climb the "Butter Tower" at the cathedral.  When I reached the top, I found myself completely alone with a 360 degree view.  Literally breathtaking!
